I'm Will and I'm a Computer Games Design Student at the University of Staffordshire.
My passion for games design allows me to use my practical skills and my creative mind, combining them in unique ways as I prototype and build out game mechanics. There is always another challenge to solve when making games, which is something I welcome as I am always looking to push myself to improve in all aspects of my life.
I primarily work in Unreal Engine using Blueprints. However, I am always looking to learn more ways to hone my skills.
When I'm not working, I enjoy immersing myself in a number of activities.
Much like with the problem solving that comes with making games, I am an avid rock climber, mainly indoor bouldering, which embodies that same level of challenge and puzzle solving that I crave. Alongside this, I also love hiking and exploring all nature has to offer, having recently experienced Snowdon for the first time. I'm also quite a creative person, enjoying drawing in sketchbooks or on my art tablet at home, often whilst listening to some music or a podcast.
It goes without saying that I am a huge fan of video games, growing up as the middle child and having a gamer dad, video games have always been a core part of my DNA. Some of my notable favourites being the Batman Arkham Series, The Legend of Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet and Clank, and Tekken. However, I also enjoy table top gaming having recently been invested in numerous play sessions of 'LOTR - Journeys in Middle-Earth' and Yu-Gi-Oh!
I am also a huge movie goer, having a great appreciation for filmmaking and storytelling. Some of my favourites include the Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, the Hunt for the Wilderpeople, the Gentleman. This goes hand in hand with my love of TV shows, where I enjoy a wide range of content, from The Bear to Dragon Ball Z to Doctor Who.
I have been very fortunate in having a many different experiences in my life leading up to my time as a game designer.
I have worked in a range of industries including microbiology, meeting some of my closest friends and feeling very gratified knowing that I was able to help people with the work I was doing, warehousing, where I gained multiple forklift licenses, and retail, which taught me a lot about how to effectively work in large teams in a fast paced environment.
You might be reading this wondering "why I'm mentioning all of this?" when I am set on being a game designer. Well, I believe that I am the culmination of all my past experiences and that they have made me into the driven individual that I am today. All of those past roles never felt right to me, but each one was nudging me closer to pursuing my dream of creating video games. To help people and bring joy to them in the same way that many of my favourite games have brought joy to me.
